Bhumesthan reconstruction

July 3, 2015

During the earthquake, all 32 houses became uninhabitable and most were completely destroyed.

With this project we are helping people to be able to build a house again, in every household in Bhumesthan.

The plan is for each of the 32 families in the village to receive enough building materials to build a small house with three rooms. Several generations live in such houses, so we only build what is necessary for a decent life.

Project information

2015 - 2018
The construction of the 32 houses took three years...
Bhumesthan

Bhumesthan is a small village attached to Fulkharka, which is in the Dhaging region.

In July 2015 we visited the village for the first time to get an overview for ourselves.

It was very sad to see that everything was really destroyed. We were all the more pleased that the whole village was pulling together and that we could all really achieve something together...

Step 1

When we visited in July, a "construction committee" was appointed. In the meantime, an audit committee has been appointed so that every process in the village is checked.

With the 25,000 CHF so far, the material was purchased to build the foundation walls for all 32 houses. Most residents will probably build two-room houses, including their own toilet - others have decided to build a terraced house in order to save materials... (as of February 2016)

step 2

In the meantime, we were able to raise money for the roofs with the help of a charity event in the spring and other generous donations. Now let's see whether we will incur any further costs - for example, to re-lay the water pipes or renovate the well. (as of August 2016)

Progress

Slowly but steadily things are progressing.
Continue reading here, we update the status of things from time to time...
As of December 2015
We have transferred another CHF 6,000 to Narayan so that construction can begin despite the blockade.
So all building materials can be bought at once - the gasoline is bought on the black market. But the harvest has been collected and the places are cleaned and ready - people now have time. We want to start.

As of February 2016
We are very pleased that great progress has already been made. The first house is finished, the whole of Bhumesthan is a construction site. People are overjoyed and are all looking forward to their new houses.

As of July 2016,
13 houses have now been completed. But the monsoon is now here, so unfortunately construction can only continue at the end of September/October. But if we consider that we couldn't really start until February 16 because of the blockade in India, we are very satisfied with the work.

As of September 2017,
24 houses have now been completed and a few more are already under construction.
But this year the monsoon is long and strong again, so we have to be patient. Of course we hope that the work will be almost completed in December; but in Nepal time simply ticks differently than here; The residents also have to share the modest resources they have for structural help and so they cannot all build at the same time.

But everyone is happy and there are always thank you messages via email and Facebook ♥

As of December 2017

After another visit to the village, we can happily confirm that every family has a home again.
