scholarships

Project start: July 6, 2016

Updated: October 2025

Although Nepal is changing, traditional customs remain deeply rooted in rural areas. For example, it is still common practice in villages among poor families to marry off girls at 16 after they finish primary school. We want to challenge this.

Since 2018, boys have also been included in the program, as it is important to the Nepalese to support the poorest families and not "only" girls. While the boys are not married, they cannot continue their schooling and must help in the fields.

For these young people, education is the only way out of poverty

To enable these young people to complete two years of high school (Grades 11 + 12 including certificate), we have decided to cover the school fees for the two years and thus give them a better future.

Project Information

The editions are always updated at the end of the year. Current status: January
2016 - present
The project began once the reconstruction was more or less settled and continues to this day.
Costs per year

Tuition fees for the Engineering School are approximately USD 330 per person per year. Tuition for the Agriculture School is approximately USD 360 per person per year. This amount includes:

  • Admission fee
  • monthly fees
  • books
  • school uniform

As in everyday life, costs rise a little each year. We adjust them accordingly. The dollar also fluctuates a lot, so prices are constantly changing slightly.

Selection process

Together with Arjun, Narayan's brother, we launched this project. Arjun is a teacher and financial administrator at the school in Phulkharka. He is therefore well-informed about which families in the region depend on this support.

Over the years, he has done excellent work. Since the available funds aren't quite enough for all children from poor families, he also looks for those who are particularly willing and talented, ensuring the money is well invested.

Future

During my trip in September 2022, I learned that approximately 15 children per year require support.
In addition, there are orphans in the lower grades who are allowed to attend school but receive no money for proper school uniforms or supplies.

Therefore, our goal is to raise approximately CHF 5,500 per year for scholarships and an additional CHF 1,000 for the orphans.

Success Stories

In September 2022, I finally visited the school again in person. I had the pleasure of meeting some current students, as well as some who had received the scholarship years ago. When word got around that I was coming, several parents also made the trip to thank me personally.

Sunita

During my visit, she asked if she could say something. She stood up and began to tell her story.

"Thanks to the scholarship, my life has changed. I am so grateful for this opportunity. Now, three years later, I work as a lecturer at the school. With the money I earn, I can support my mother and sisters. For the students who receive the scholarship, it is their only chance at an educated life, a way out of poverty. Please continue this work, because it gives us hope and prevents so much suffering."

Your words meant a lot to me, because sometimes, so far away from Nepal, you do start to doubt whether you can make a lasting difference. Sunita showed me how important our work is.

A student has opened a hair salon in Kathmandu. A license to run such a business is only granted upon completion of the 12th grade.

This mother had learned that I was at the school, so she made the trip to thank me for making her daughters' education possible. Both now work as teachers.
That look, that gratitude and warmth – priceless!

Several students who received the scholarship have begun their army training. This is only possible after completing the 12th grade. The army is a good employer in Nepal, one of the few that offers security such as access to medical services and a pension fund.

Amrit

He doesn't actually live in the Fulkharka district. He had already completed his tenth year of school and works as a temporary helper in the village. However, Arjun recognized his potential and included him in the program.

During my visit, he proudly told me that after his training he wants to open his own farm with all the knowledge he has now gained, so that he no longer has to work for other people.

Apparently, he's also one of the best students, which I was extremely pleased to hear. This showed me that Arjun takes his task very seriously and awards the scholarships with care.

A girl from Bhumibol, who lost her father in an accident, was able to graduate thanks to our scholarship. She was so successful that she received a scholarship to study in Japan. Her future has changed so dramatically because of our small help ♥

Nothing ventured, nothing gained
