Goats for needy villages

The aim of the Goat Distribution Program is to support needy villages in Nepal.

Our goal is to give people in impoverished villages the opportunity to build a better future. How? By donating goats, which provide food and income through breeding. Goats not only supply nutritious milk and meat, but also valuable wool and other byproducts for further processing. Their simple breeding requires minimal resources, thus securing livelihoods efficiently.

Since the devastating earthquake of 2015, many people are still living in corrugated iron shacks. Their income is insufficient to buy building materials for a new house. Many families also lack the funds to provide their children with a complete school education. We want to support these families and enable them to earn additional income through goat farming.

In 2021, we launched the "Goat Distribution Program," and in 2022 we were able to help the village Grang in the Langtang region; in 2024, the village of Kaste in the Dhading region.
Narayan is currently looking for a new village we can support in the future.

Cost

The exact costs are difficult to estimate. We anticipate approximately $200 per animal, including transport, and approximately $1200 for the breeding male.
Prices in Nepal, both for fuel (transport) and for the animals themselves, are heavily dependent on the global economy and the availability of goods. The dollar also fluctuates significantly, so prices are constantly changing.

A question we are frequently asked is: Why are the goats almost the same price as the cows from the crowdfunding campaign? Cows are sacred in Nepal. They are not eaten. Therefore, they can only be used for milk production and resale. A cow's gestation period is considerably longer than a goat's, and she also gives birth to fewer calves. All these factors make the goat comparable in price to a cow.

Goats not only provide nutritious milk and meat, enriching an often monotonous diet, but also valuable wool and other byproducts for daily use. Furthermore, they are easy to raise and require minimal resources, making them a simple way to secure a livelihood.

Progress on the goat projects:
Change doesn't happen overnight.
Families gradually build up their herds, gain experience, and only over several years do noticeable improvements become apparent in daily life.
Therefore, there aren't always big news items – but rather small steps that can make a big difference in the long run.
