School support

Chhirin, Dorje, Pasang

July 2023

During the earthquake, Mingmar, the father of Chhirin (2008), Dorje (2010) and Pasang (2014), was caught in an avalanche in the Langtang area and died. He earned his money as a porter and companion for foreign trekking groups.

The family lived in a Buddhist Tamang village called Gatlang near the Tibetan border. After the earthquake, the traditional family home was devastated and the family lost both their father and their important income.

Sonam, the mother of the three children, moved to Kathmandu because she saw the greatest opportunities there to find a job and support her family.
Sonam currently earns money through sewing and making jewelry. The family lives in a small room that has a Campling gas stove but no bathroom.

Sonam wants her children to have a solid education, to learn to read and write and to have a chance in the future job market. She herself is unable to pay the fees for the day school with overnight accommodation.

Goal & Costs

Our goal is to support the family so that the children can attend school safely.

School fees including accommodation and lodging cost approximately $550 per child per year.

Why this family?
Mingmar, the father, was a very good friend of Narayan. He accompanied Narayan on many treks. Narayan has known the family for a long time and has repeatedly drawn our attention to their fate...
