New project idea - Boer goats

May 9, 2021

Christine Herzog is in close contact with the Lions Club Hochwald-Hermeskeil. They are always looking for worthwhile projects they can support. Christine told them about the work of wir bewegen (we move), and that quickly led to the idea of asking in Bhumesthan if they needed any further assistance.

Two needs emerged during discussions with the villagers.

  • On the one hand, the construction of a community center, so that the village council no longer has to meet at the "lazy Stone", or so that the children would have a common place to learn after school.
  • On the other hand, you would like to professionalize goat breeding.

On the one hand, the goats can meet the daily milk requirement and provide the occasional meat meal. On the other hand, the families can establish a goat herd and sell the offspring to generate income. The Lions Club Hochwald-Hermeskeil is very enthusiastic about the idea of supporting the families in Bhumesthan in setting up a goat herd. Much thought and discussion ensued. Ultimately, the desire was to purchase a specific breed, as these are particularly well-suited for breeding and in high demand.
Since spring, the residents of Bhumesthan have been searching – but this is proving somewhat more difficult and expensive than anticipated. The desired Buuren goats appear to be rare in Nepal. Whether they will ultimately acquire only Buuren goats remains to be seen. On the one hand, breeding would be profitable for sales in that case – but the initial investment costs are high.

Even though things are often quiet on our website, in real life we are always in contact with Nepal and look at how we can improve the simple lives of the people there in a way that allows self-help to progress further.
