School support

Chhirin, Dorje, Pasang

July 2023

During the earthquake, Mingmar, the father of Chhirin (2008), Dorje (2010) and Pasang (2014), was caught in a landslide in the Langtang region and died. He earned his living as a porter and guide for foreign trekking groups.

The family lived in a predominantly Buddhist Tamang village called Gatlang, near the Tibetan border. After the earthquake, their traditional family home was destroyed, and the family lost both their father and their vital source of income.

Sonam, the mother of the three children, moved to Kathmandu because she saw the best chance there of finding work and supporting her family. Currently, Sonam earns her living by sewing and making jewelry.
The family lives in a small room with a camping gas stove but no bathroom.

Sonam wants her children to have a solid education, to learn to read and write, and to have a chance in the future job market. She herself cannot afford the fees for the overnight day school.

School fees, including room and board, cost approximately $550 per child per year. Starting in 2024, Chhring will enter 11th grade, which costs $850.

Why this family
Mingmar, the father, was a very good friend of Narayan's. He accompanied Narayan on many treks. Narayan has known the family for a long time and has repeatedly drawn our attention to their plight...
