During the earthquake, Mingmar, the father of Chhirin (2008), Dorje (2010) and Pasang (2014), was caught in a landslide in the Langtang region and died. He earned his living as a porter and guide for foreign trekking groups.
The family lived in a predominantly Buddhist Tamang village called Gatlang, near the Tibetan border. After the earthquake, their traditional family home was destroyed, and the family lost both their father and their vital source of income.
Sonam, the mother of the three children, moved to Kathmandu because she saw the best chance there of finding work and supporting her family. Currently, Sonam earns her living by sewing and making jewelry.
The family lives in a small room with a camping gas stove but no bathroom.
Sonam wants her children to have a solid education, to learn to read and write, and to have a chance in the future job market. She herself cannot afford the fees for the overnight day school.
